Climate Justice Alliance Press and Communications Coordinator

 

Background: The Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) is seeking a full-time Press and Communications Coordinator to support the storytelling and amplify the visibility of local organizing, multiple stakeholders, and expanding membership within CJA’s Just Transition framework and 4 year strategy. This is a full-time, one-year employment with the possibility of being extended. Location is flexible.

CJA’s mission is to forge a socially and economically just transition away from an extractive economy and towards healthy, resilient local communities, to address the root causes of climate change.  In 2012, CJA developed the Our Power Campaign engaging 40 member organizations to create a vision that supports local and national campaign goals rooted in front line, community-based struggles, including those of Indigenous peoples, people of color, new immigrants and working class peoples.  The CJA seeks to catalyze a broad-based, scalable campaign for transition away from industries that undermine the well-being of human communities and environmental systems – like dirty energy , industrial-scale manufacturing and agribusiness – and transform local economies into models of sustainability, equity, and resilience.  The Campaign supports local organizing through peer-exchange, trainings and direct action, and coalition work to advance policies to end extreme energy and promote climate-protecting jobs.

 

Job Description  -  Press and Communications Coordinator

The CJA Press and Communications Coordinator is a high functioning, organized storyteller that is focused on impact  supporting the communication channels, stories, and outlets that best position CJA and the Our Power Communities and share the successes of a Just Transition and Energy Democracy as a root cause remedies for climate change.  They are responsible for carrying out the Our Power Communities Strategy and Implementation plan as described below.  They report to the Executive Director and work in consultation with other CJA staff, work groups, organizers, policy, research, funder engagement personnel and regional anchor organizations across the nation to best amplify the best message and narrative strategy for our communities.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Plan, develop and implement agreed collective communications strategies for each campaign and the alliance  as a whole.

  • Proactively build and expand CJA’s network of journalist and media contacts in the US and to ensure strong outreach to our target audiences in the grassroots, with philanthropy, and to policymakers.

  • Write compelling press releases, briefings, op-eds, speeches and articles and pitch stories and features to journalists.

  • Work in coordination with member communication staff to deliver unified messaging that resonates at a local, regional, and national level.

  • Respond to media inquiries and work. Build the speakers bureau to maximize opportunities for coverage, building their confidence as thought leaders.

  • Respond quickly and creatively to media opportunities, delivering what journalists need on time.

  • Produce copy for annual reports and quarterly funder briefings, letters and flyers to engage new audiences, including high-profile supporters.

  • Coordinate media and communication partnerships and press events – ensuring the smooth operations of special events, including for guest speakers, Patrons and other high-profile supporters.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience of working in a media/press team with excellent working knowledge of all media channels.

  • Strong current environmental, justice, and climate change news understanding and ability to convey complex messages to multiple audiences.

  • A track record of initiating and delivering projects with minimal supervision.

  • Experience of managing strategic relationships with partners (philanthropy, high-profile, grassroots).

  • Ability to influence individuals, internally and externally.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a good understanding of social media..

  • Ability to produce inspiring and fact-checked copy for print and online.

  • Tactful, friendly and calm under pressure.

  • Confident, resilient, tenacious and collaborative in your approach.
