Little Village Environmental Justice Organization Quilt Square

Last Wednesday Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) celebrated the 3rd anniversary since the closing of the Crawford Coal Power plant. LVEJO had organized for 15 years to close the plant before it shut down in August 2012.

#‎ItTakesRootstoWeathertheStorm. We are deeply rooted in communities on the frontlines of the extractive economy as well as the#‎environmentaljustice movement. Our collective experience, #‎resilience, and commitment to a #‎justtransition provide a deep well of knowledge for what action needs to be taken.”

-LVEJO on Facebook, August 12, 2015

On that day, LVEJO also presented their quilt square for the Summer of Our Power relay.

Our youth went out to the Crawford Coal Power Plant to celebrate the  of its closure.

Here’s a video from the event:

LVEJO was founded in 1994 by public school parents who organized against their children’s exposure to dangerous chemicals during a school renovation. Since then, LVEJO has continued to work on environmental justice in Little Village and beyond by organizing for clean power, public space, accessible public transit and empowering youth.

Here’s a little bit of what LVEJO has been working on this summer, via social media:
